Da Gooruf UK – Uber and Out? who would be affected by its loss?

With 21 days to appeal, the transport service will still be in operation but has improvements to make. Uber faces allegations around sexual assault and complaints management are among reasons for TfL’s refusal to renew their contract. A failure in its appeal would see the loss of 3.5million users and 40,000 drivers made unemployed.

“3.5 million Londoners who use our app, and more than 40,000 licensed drivers who rely on the service to make a living, will be astounded by this decision.” The likelihood of a failed appeal remains uncertain, but it could spell dramatic change for the public who make up its user/employee base.

Uber’s 3.5 Million users facing dramatic change

The company gained a competitive edge in the realm of public transport through its affordability. At half the cost of a taxi, it gained ground against its established rivals. But its loss may mean higher bills for commuters and disabled users, many people already taking to social media to express their outrage.

“Tell thousands they’re out of a job with eight days notice and remove affordable transport for more thousands. Well done @tfl” – Callum Smith. For many in distant boroughs of London who need transportation for work, TfL’s move looks to cut at their mobility.

40,000 drivers face unemployment

for a long time, Uber drivers have been employees and contributors under the ‘Gig-Economy.’ Working conditions for their drivers came under scrutiny in 2016, resulting in a court victory. Initially, its structure was a patchwork of thousands of separate companies and didn’t necessitate providing any employment benefits.

Employees of this firm may now see their hard-won rights lost and placed into worrying territory. Working at minimum wage theoretically, allows for flexibility, but Uber drivers work as much as possible. Some drivers are working as many as 90 hours to make ends meet due to minimum wage and expenses.

“I made an investment in this business on the promise I would make good money…It’s expensive for us and cheap for the public, and those two don’t match very well.” – David Dunn, an Uber driver working in Glasgow
